Worm bin bedding is very important and could cause success or failure in your worm composting ventures. Worm bins should always lean heavy on the carbon side to avoid worm composting disasters. Beddings that are too rich in nitrogen with no carbon based materials added as buffer will eventually have problems. These problems can include bedding that gets too hot due to excess nitrogen, or off gassing of ammonia. These two factors can lead to the demise of your worms. To prevent these problems, use high carbon beddings to start your worm bin, and whenever feeding high nitrogen materials like fruit and vegetable scraps, also add a small amount of carbon bedding to offset the nitrogen present in the food scraps.
Good high carbon beddings include:
Shredded plain brown cardboard, pine shaving animal bedding, rinsed coconut coir, mulched brown tree leaves.
